As a kid, I would watch my brother and his friends work day and night on their cars. The typical shade tree mechanics would stay up all night working on early 1970s Plymouth Dusters and Dodge Challengers with 440 six-packs and 426 Hemi engines. This was my first introduction to muscle cars. Then during high school, a neighbor drove a 1965 red Pontiac GTO. I rode in that car often, helped him work on it, and wanted one just like it – loud, fast, and cool. My first car though, was a hand-me-down. Not quite as cool, but it was mine.
After many years of owning one or two cars at a time, I had the opportunity to purchase a great muscle car that reminded me of the neighbor’s car. Then, I bought another. It was an everyday occurrence to stop for gas only to have someone else approach and engage in conversation about whichever car I was driving. “What year is your car?” “How long have you had it?” Complete strangers will engage in a long conversation recalling the car their dad drove, their first car, or the car they always wished they had owned. Of course, many of us have that one car that makes us wonder, “Why didn’t I keep it? And then proclaim: “I wish I still had that car!”
It became clear the passion for classic cars was not mine alone, and sharing our cars with others allowed them to share their memories and fulfill their dreams. This is how Austin Classic Car Rental was born.
